For them film and politics were blends

I was watching Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan announce the arrival of their new parties. He suggested that three tropes or events anchored the phenomenon of democracy in India. It is not just that Bollywood and its variations no longer anchor the stuff of myth, the problem is compounded by the fact that the relation between film and politics, the reciprocity is broken. The introductions smelt like a brigade film. The third model is film, which provides many of the myths and oppositions that a culture must resolve. Today what haunts domesticity is TV.There are cultural dangers here that we must understand. No Amitabh struts on the stage reciting dialogues. The new aspirational India does not have narratives beyond idiot patriotism and a dismal idea of development. They are not the stuff of characters when a great self, an iconic image emerges but a string of selfies, each forgotten and replaced before the next release.T. In fact, sadly, Kamal and Rajini confirm the break between toggle bolts Suppliers cinema and real life. This is why the death of Sridevi, in what was turned by the media into a filmy ending, signalled not just the passing away of a legendary star, but the end of an era. She embodied more than anyone else a sense of playfulness, a chutzpah, a zest for life. Rajini sporting a touch of saffron and Kamal a shade of pink. One would never see Jayalalithaa, N. But their very performance breaks the link between the real and reel politic.

They are mythical creatures in a way the contemporary stars cannot be. They dominated it, defined it and finally transcended it to become a part of folklore, even providing the metaphors for everyday conversations. Our present lot is too transient; they lack the stuff of archetype. If one thinks of Bollywood, one thinks of the opposition between public and private, the rule of law and family loyalty, the contest between urban and rural. Both seem to be caught in the grid of left and right. As a result of the weakening of these three models, democracy itself has become rigid, electoral and empty.Rajini talked of spirituality and Kamal about a new politics. Today culture has dullness because our myths have faded. In fact, the death of Sridevi raises many of these questions. Of these three forces, the decline of film as an imagination is what worries one more. They are not period pieces but fragments of history. In fact, all three anchors of democracy have lost their power or imagination. A society without myths and modern myths that film produces is able to both hybridise tradition and modernity and make a more pluralistic transition between tradition and modernity.Cricketed is a moneyed enterprise, science has lost its sense of playfulness and has become an extension of industry, and Bollywood has lost its sense of mythmaking. One does not have legends today like Mother India and Gabbar Singh. She was the last of the legends with Rekha playing an Indian Garbo in retreat.

For them film and politics were blends, each resonated the other. Both emphasise a need, a desire for a different definition of the political. At the most it is science fiction, the caricature of a narrative. Modernity has no real myth beyond consumerism.Yet they belong to a period that is over. Technology is still not a creative science of myth. There are often other factors beyond politics. It is as if nationalist India from 1947 to the beginning of this century had myths in cricket, film and science, but Modiesque India, by messing around with myths, has distorted them. In that sense, Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan provided the latitude and longitude of Bollywood. When one thinks of Hindi films, Nargis, Madhubala, Rekha, Smita Patil and Madhuri, are the stuff of legend, folklore and gossip. We felt that if Sridevi could do that in film, we could perform that in real life. It was not the so-called mystery of her death that intrigued me, but her sense of mystique. But there is a more tragic problem. Rama Rao or MGR in that position. The cricketer not only embodied style and competence, s/he represented the idea of a rule game, of a normative system.I was thinking of all this the day Sridevi died. The other day a friend asked whether the language and grammar of culture were changing. Yet both offer hope without content, one almost feels that they have been given poor scripts and are stuttering over their lines. In the popular idiom to say “it is not cricket”, is to metaphorically say one is violating the rules of the game. Today’s actresses look like fashion models on loan to the film industry. But history has changed. Old people thrive on it and cinema has become more occasional. Sadly, today many of these myths do not dominate Bollywood. Sridevi was larger than life and yet so life like. There is TV, which has stolen the idea of everydayness from film.

Even the search for urban models has come to a standstill. The rest had gravitas but Sridevi conveyed the lighter side of the celebration of desire, oozing a sense of invitation but stopping short of seduction, being the hoarding, the poster on the wall and the girl next door. There is a missingness of myth in cinema and daily life. They appear transient. One hopes the real experiments in film will recreate the unconscious such that democracy becomes less coercive and more inventive. Science provides a generalised model of truth, objectivity, fairness and the need for rituals of experiment to verify facts. The first was cricket, which provided rules of fair play and the exemplars of sportsmanship. Film seems to have lost the script of politics or even a feel for it. The male characters appear like imitations of the past. We are trying to survive with fragments of that myth..The second of our great models is science. Yet one could never dismiss her as lightheaded or lighthearted. She conveyed a desire for life, going beyond any consumer dream, linking the dreams of the North and South in a way few dared. People realised that her funeral was also an act of mourning for an age

After Sania Mirza gave Rajdeep Sardesai an earful

Coming to the issue, I really liked the way Sania Mirza handled the questions and shut down Rajdeep.” Alarmingly, these aren’t one off cases. It doesn’t mean you aren’t supposed to have children. I just feel sad for the anchors because if they continue to ask such questions, they’re in for it,” says Gita Aravamudan, a feminist and an author who writes on gender issues. These questions are just like a hangover from the past because you don’t see these anchors constantly questioning Salman Khan about his marriage, *** life or how many kids he wants and he wants to settle down in life so why question her But the trend is changing now and more women have started to stand up for themselves and are being proud feminists. It’s just that today, it has become fashionable to say things like I’m not a feminist, which I personally don’t understand because there’s nothing wrong in being one.

After Sania Mirza gave Rajdeep Sardesai an earful about his casually ***ist remark about “settling down”, Bollywood’s begum, Kareena Kapoor Khan rammed down questions about taking a “maternity break” by being as clear as it can get — “I’m pregnant. She made a fair poin t— ’Why do you get the existential question and I get the rabbit food question ’ If one remembers, Reese Witherspoon too started the nylon nail-in anchors SuppliersAskmemore campaign # because all that actresses had to field on the red carpet were questions about their clothes! This conversation is moot without a mention of how Jennifer Aniston owned a publication’s column last week. Not a corpse. It’s apparently just that ridiculous. But feminism has been around for long and women have been speaking up for it.Female celebrities are hitting out against ***ist perceptions that pigeonhole their lives Feminism is no longer just about women’s rights.Earlier this year, Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson was asked about her diet while her The Avengers co-star Robert Downey Jr was asked about his character in the film.

It’s about why women should be treated any differently from men. I have children and grandchildren and am a proud feminist so I don’t understand why men and women don’t like the term. The actress who is not on social media was forced to pen down her thoughts because she was “fed up” of being asked about her alleged baby bump and being congratulated on it, while all she had done was eat a burger for lunch! Think it’s silly Nope..So, does this really have something to do with ***ism or a downright voyeuristic need to pry into the personal lives of these women “Since we have 24 hour channels now, people are becoming more obsessed with the lives of celebrities

Along the route, popular with weekend hikers and cyclists, memorials tell the personal stories of many of the around 130 people killed along the Wall."For me, democracy is everything — those two years in prison were worth five years of freedom in the west."I still get goosebumps every time I cross the old border between East and West Germany — thatll never go away. What was once a heavily-fortified border strip that encircled West Berlin, patrolled by guards under shoot-to-kill orders, was in 2006 turned into the Mauerweg or Berlin Wall path. With heavy legs, most runners will jog through Saturday night, aiming to reach the city centre stadium which doubles as both start and finish, in the early hours of Sunday."I still get goosebumps thinking about it," admits Ilk.Precious little of the original concrete structure remains, most of it hurriedly torn down when the former East German state collapsed in late 1989."."The physical challenge is one thing, the other is for the head," added Ilk.Elite athletes will run the whole way with hobby runners out to beat the 30-hours time limit.- Political prisoners -Last year, the Walls youngest victim, Joerg Hartmann, a 10-year-old boy shot dead by East German border guards in 1966 while trying to visit his father in the west, was honoured.

It passes iconic landmarks the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie but also crosses through leafy suburbs, farmland and forests.Having each been asked to carry a gift for him, last years runners piled cuddly toys at the spot he was killed."When you move around Berlin now, you hardly see any of the Wall left, but when you run the path and see its scale, you have a better understanding of the divide it caused," said race organiser Olaf Ilk, who was born in East Germany and was 24 when the Wall fell.Logistics co-ordinator Andreas Pfeiffer must ensure half a tonne of provisions reach each of the 26 stations along the route. The course record, set by Briton Mark Perkins in 2014, stands at a mind-blowing 13 hours, 6 minutes for the 100 miles."You have to accept that you will be moving for 24 hours," says west Berlin runner Nina Blisse, who finished both the 2014 and 2015 editions in under 26 hours and is race treasurer. The race is part ultra-marathon, part tribute to those who died trying to cross the Wall, which the East German communist regime hastily erected in 1961, and stood for 28 years.5 billion Deutschmarks by East Germany under a scheme between 1963 and 1989, according to government figures.Berlin: Where guard towers and barbed wire once stood, runners will this weekend pound the 100-mile (160 kilometres) path along the former Berlin Wall in a race with victims of the Cold War relic at its heart. The Walls history is entwined in the races DNA.Each year, one Wall victim is chosen for a special tribute, their face featuring on start numbers and finisher medals, while a ceremony is held at the spot where they died. For the first race in 2011, Chris Gueffroy, the last person shot dead on the Berlin Wall, was honoured

Though a controversy had erupted following reports

Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran told reporters on Tuesday that government employees would also be participating in the womens wall. The wall would be formed between 4 and 4:15 pm, with participants taking a pledge to uphold gender equality and renaissance values. The participants would also be taking a pledge for upholding gender equality and renaissance values.Thiruvananthapuram: Lakhs of women from various walks of life would be participating in the 620 km-long state-sponsored "Womens wall" campaign stretching from the northern tip of Kasaragod to the southern end in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday to uphold gender equality and renaissance values.LDF is expecting over 30 lakh women to take part in the event. All arrangements are in place in order to avoid traffic snarls in the state," Surendran said. "Government employees will also be taking part in the initiative. The participants would gather at the designated centers on Tuesday at 3:30 pm, when a rehearsal would be held. Schools in some districts have declared a holiday in the afternoon while Universities have postponed examinations which were to be held on Tuesday amid wholesale lead wood screw anchors allegations of misuse of official machinery, which the LDF has denied.

The Womens wall was suggested at a meeting called by the Kerala government following the massive protests by right-wing parties and a section of devotees over the governments decision to implement the September 28 apex court order, allowing women of all ages to offer prayers at Sabarimala. The Nair Service Society (NSS), a prominent organization of the upper caste Nair community, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) are among those who are not participating. Leader of Opposition in the assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, has described the initiative as a wall of contradiction, while UDF MLA M K Muneer has termed it as a communal wall for inviting participation only from progressive Hindu organisations.Women, cutting across caste and religion, would join the wall "to save Kerala from the being dragged back into the era of darkness, he said."The protests by communal forces against womens entry in Sabarimala had prompted the government and other progressive organisations to conceive the idea of a Womens Wall in the state," Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Though a controversy had erupted following reports that the government had set apart Rs 50 crore for the event, the Chief Minister had categorically denied it saying no government fund would be utilised for the same.25 lakh volunteers of the Kudambashree Mission, would also be participating. While Health minister K K Shailaja would lead the chain at Kasargod, senior CPM leader Brinda Karat would be the last person at the end of the chain in Thiruvananthapuram. Many prominent personalities, including film actors, from all spheres of life are expected to take part in the event. The "Womens wall" was conceived in the backdrop of frenzied protests witnessed in the hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala after the CPI(M)-led LDF government decided to implement the Supreme Court verdict, allowing all women to pray at the Ayyappa shrine.Preparations are almost over as state ministers and district collectors are in charge to make the initiative a big success and all efforts are being made to streamline any hiccups. To counter the Womens wall, thousands of volunteers of Sabarimala Karma Samithi and other right-wing groups, BJP and RSS and NSS had lit Ayyappa Jyothies (lighting of sacred lamps) across the state on December 26..Over 1.The event is being organised by the ruling LDF along with over 176 other socio-political organisations, including the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) and Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha (KPMS)

While Delhi was trying to grapple with severe

Even after return, the health minister’s insensitive comments and the photographs of a wining and dining deputy chief minister while out on a tour to Finland didn’t augur well with the citizens of a city shivering with fever. It’s important to understand that in a multi-party democracy with federal structure of government, it’s extremely important to have the ability to cooperate and coordinate. The least AAP government could have done is proper cleaning of PWD drains that comes directly under it. Its busy finding an easy way out by blaming others in a blatant attempt to shift focus from its inability to deliver.Similar allegations are now being made by party workers in Punjab — dubious considerations are at play for ticket distribution. Instead of going hoarse crying political conspiracy, the AAP government should answer why there’s no woman in its Cabinet and what happened to tall promises of marshals in buses and Mohalla Suraksha Committees The problems of the AAP are more internal than external. The first meeting convened by Mr Kejriwal after his long absence due to Vipasana focused not on Delhi, but on delegating responsibilities to senior AAP leaders and ministers including deputy CM for other poll bound states. As deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia finally got back from his Finland tour and went to meet the Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, a miscreant threw ink on him. Mr Kejriwal’s motto seems to be “Veni, vidi, vici (I came, I saw, I conquered)”. However, instead of focusing on measures to prevent dengue, the AAP was busy expanding its net in other states, governance in Delhi being the least of its priorities. An AAP supporter would retort“sab mile huye hain”. No amount of high budget and misleading ad campaigns could hide the fact of collapsing infrastructure, growing sanitation problem, increasing rate of crime, and disintegrating administrative machinery. The party is suffering from ideological bankruptcy, intellectual dishonesty, arrogance, inability to introspect and absorb internal dissent and utter lack of spirit of cooperation. The writer is chief spokesperson, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, and national media panelist, AICC. Before that the BJP ruled for one term. Delhi is in shambles.

While Delhi was trying to grapple with severe onslaught of chikungunya and dengue, all except one minister of AAP government were out of town together for a crucial period of time.Since coming to power, the AAP government has been embroiled in various controversies and scams ranging from alleged fake degrees to charges of corruption, domestic violence and *** scandals. Mr Kejriwal and his government betrayed the people of Delhi by its ineffectual, confrontationist, and irresponsible model of governance. While acts like throwing ink or any act of violence cannot be condoned, Mr Sisodia should try to understand people’s feelings of rage and betrayal for being abandoned by an elected government at a time of severe health crisis. Delhi is governed by Transaction of Business Rules of GNCTD, 1993, that provides a clear roadmap of operation for the elected government of Delhi as well as the LG. Congress governed and delivered under the same set of rules for 15 years. So why blame others when the Delhi government failed to do its own bit That’s the usual pattern with the AAP. Being at constant loggerheads with the Centre, LG, MCD, bureaucrats and even media do not help china toggle sub manufacturers in smooth governance. Mr Kejriwal must understand that in a democracy, electoral “conquests” must be followed by delivery and good governance. The conscience-keepers of the party, people like Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, were humiliated and thrown out when they voiced their concerns over lack of transparency and internal democracy. While the BJP-led Central government is not exactly known for upholding values of co-operative federalism, the problem is multiplied manifold by hyper-confrontational and irresponsible attitude of the AAP.What went wrong with the party that set the imagination of thousands of Indians on fire when it was formed just a few years ago High ideals and lofty promises of clean politics, efficient and accountable governance sound hollow faced with harsh realities of deaths that were entirely avoidable.

Pre-monsoon desilting of drains is a regular preventive measure against water-logging and vector-borne diseases. But as per PWD website, only 30 per cent of PWD drains were desilted as on July 5, 2016, after the rains hit the capital. But after “conquering” Delhi, the party seems to be clueless as what to do next. A party that made women security a major electoral plank is now ignoring accusations of ***ual exploitation of women party workers, and various charges of alleged molestation and misbehaviour with women by its MLAs. One wonders what kind of scrutiny was done for selecting candidates. There may have been problems, but it was never played out as public spectacles affecting the governance and the lives of general public. Delhi had bestowed immense faith in the AAP by giving it an unprecedented mandate. While political parties fight, governance is teamwork, especially in Delhi with its complex multi-agency administrative system. In a hurry to be in the prime ministerial race for 2019, Mr Kejriwal is more interested in looking for new pastures rather than focusing on governing Delhi and consolidating its gains. If the previous chief ministers could operate and deliver under the same set of rules, why does Mr Kejriwal think that the rules should be bent for him It may be noted that there had been times when BJP ruled in Centre and Congress in the state, and vice-versa. Development of any kind has come to a standstill, and the people of Delhi are being held hostage in endless crossfire between the Centre and the state government. One hoped that the government would’ve learnt its lessons from last year’s experience when the dengue cases in Delhi touched an unprecedented high of nearly 16,000. Mr Sisodia’s reaction was predictable, immediately blaming it on the Opposition political parties. An inexperienced government with a high degree of arrogance due to the massive mandate it received in elections, the AAP is not willing to learn. This needs to be completed by June 15 every year before the onset of monsoons

They were both a buffer against invasion but equally participants

This may be excessively cynical, and an alternative view is that movies shape our understanding of political events. Some outstanding war movies, for instance, did largely conform to the known and recorded facts, taking into account the challenges of picturisation. This may be because people come to a movie expecting entertainment and thus are more gullible. It seems that in contemporary India, films are serving that purpose. At other times, it has been argued that most movies take artistic license with facts as history lacks a cinematic plot.Clausewitz had said: “War is the continuation of politics by other means”. Bollywood would generally not challenge the prejudices and myth-making of the masses. The counter-arguments are many. Except in Balochistan, it largely conforms to the frontier of the Sikh kingdom with Afghanistan. The bigger problem is far more substantive. A recent high-definition portrayal of British troops trapped on the beaches at the start of World War II is marvelously done in the movie Dun******k.. After all, it has been preceded by two movies with political undertones — namely the Accidental Prime Minister and Uri. Jay Singh-Sohal. It raises multiple questions about movies depicting military history. The tribal uprising of Afridis, aided by Orakzais, that led to the Battle of Saragarhi, was really Pashtun resistance over their tribes being divided by the Durand Line, including the separation of the fertile Peshawar valley from the highlands. For example, in the post-9/11 movies it is easy to market stereotypes of Muslims as fanatics.

The British, turning foe into ally, began raising Sikh troops in the second half of the 19th century, particularly to manage the western border as Russia intruded into Central Asia in 1881-85.S. They are not alerted to evaluate that a political mesغير مجاز مي باشدe is being directly or subliminally delivered. Sikhs in the British Indian Army inherited a martial tradition from the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the first indigenous ruler to control Punjab in a thousand years. Bollywood would naturally produce a version of history that draws the maximum viewers. As pure depiction of a military conflict, the D-Day landings in Europe in the movie The Longest Day have no match. Trolls on Twitter angrily asked what was objectionable about Bollywood educating them about past iconic battles? Others wondered what was wrong with the celebration of past valour. If one wants to learn about the battle, there is already an excellent documentary on the Battle of Saragarhi, introduced by a UK-based military historian, Capt. The Vietnam movies follow a different route as the fall of Saigon was really the first defeat of the US military abroad. Lt. Stephen Marche in Esquire writes that “going to a Hollywood movie for a history lesson is like going to a brothel for a lecture in philosophy”. He noted that the beards of soldiers of 36th Sikh Regiment were never carried open, nor were their turbans saffron, a colour with religious connotation for Hindus, Sikhs and of course the BJP. In 1893, after two Anglo-Afghan wars, a boundary was decided, now called the Durand Line. The movie Kesari could have framed Saragarhi as combat between nationalistic Pashtuns wanting to recapture the lands Ranjit Singh seized from them and Sikhs fighting to avenge the memory of old hurts like multiple raids into Punjab by Ahmad Shah Durrani, alias Abdali, the founder of modern Afghanistan, as indeed the betrayal by Afghans in the crucial Anglo-Sikh Battle of Chillianwala. A study wedge anchor clearance hole factory by Notre Dame researchers Todd Adkins and Jeremiah J. Castle concludes that movies are more effective in shaping political opinion than news and advertising. It has faced public outrage by segments of the population when so doing, as happened with the film Padmavat. After his death in 1839 and two Anglo-Sikh wars, the British annexed Punjab in 1849, thereby inheriting the Pashtun problem.

On the other hand, it can be a simplistic parable of the children of mother India battling Muslim invaders, which plays into the broader racial memory of Indian audiences. In other words, movies can confirm our prejudices insubtle ways. They were both a buffer against invasion but equally participants if loot and pillage beckoned. Gen.The Pashtuns have been at the western approaches to India since before the invasion by Alexander the Great. What were the facts, the historical context and the geo-politics of the Saragarhi clash between 21 Sikhs and a few thousand Pashtuns?Hollywood has treated the subjects of war and peace diversely. It is possible that the film’s makers are merely riding the jingoistic public mood. The main protagonist Havildar Ishar Singh in real life would have had a khaki turban and had his beard properly tied, thus not looked like an angry villager just roused from sleep, or a Taliban fighter in saffron. A propaganda film The Green Berets was made in 1968 by an aged John Wayne to counter the anti-war movement. The Bollywood film Kesari, which is playing now in theatres across India, picturises the iconic last stand of 21 soldiers, plus one attendant, of 36th Sikh regiment of the British Indian Army at Saragarhi in 1897. H. Distinct from these are the Sylvester Stallone-created Rambo adventures of an underdog fighting the American system that had abandoned veterans. But should the regulators, reviewers and television anchors simply play along and be as gullible as the audience or forewarn that the movie may be feeding communal prejudices and that too on the eve of a general election. Hollywood has used stories from World War II, the Vietnam conflict and now the American intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001.What then should be the purpose of action-war movies? Should they educate the viewer about past military successes, failures, great fights or tragic defeats? Or they are pure entertainment, and the facts can be tweaked to make the plot more palatable. The Mughals, Ranjit Singh, the British, the Russians and now Pakistan and the United States have not been able to settle the trans-Indus Pashtun problem. The battle of Saragarhi in Kesari thus needs reviewing from this broader context. It could also be that the movie was additionally intended for political mesغير مجاز مي باشدing at a crucial moment in India’s electoral cycle. Panag, a former Northern Army commander and Sikh Regiment product, felt military history must be treated with greater sensitivity. Apocalypse Now in 1979 was in the genre of new Hollywood films willing to address the absurdity of war, the dehumanising impact of conflict and a different vision of the military, uncoloured by chauvinism. The saying goes that “drama’s laws drama’s patrons give”

Previously those riskier ventures had been lumped into Googles overall financial results.NICKELED AND DIMEDSome companies acquired by Google found that being part of Alphabet wasnt what theyd bargained for. Self-driving car project china wedge concrete anchors manufacturer Waymo is considered among the leaders in the burgeoning industry.Wall Street cheered.“The reason Google gets to trade at a decent multiple… is because theres a growth story beyond advertising,” said analyst James Wang of ARK Investment Management.2 billion for the start-up in 2014.Two former Nest employees said they were promised generous funding and time to achieve profitability following the companys acquisition by Google in 2014. No deal materialized, and Nest co-founder Tony Fadell departed last year. The units also felt pressure to maintain Google perks such as free employee meals.Alphabets top management also aimed to boost accountability by appointing chief executives to head each of the Other Bets. Investors would now see Google’s performance independent of its so-called “Other Bets,” an eclectic collection of 11 ventures. After the restructuring, Alphabet began charging Other Bets for their portion of shared services such as security and facilities, ending what had previously amounted to a subsidy, people familiar with the situation said.3 billion in revenue in 2016.In addition, scrutiny from Wall Street limits how generous Alphabet can be in extending Googles resources to Other Bets, said Brian McClendon, a former vice president of engineering at Google.“It did sort of send the mesغير مجاز مي باشدe to people who stayed back at Google, whether in search or in ads: Your job isn’t to push the envelope,” one former Googler said. As a whole, Alphabet generated . This month, Alphabet agreed to sell robotics company Boston Dynamics to Japanese multinational SoftBank Group Corp. Few people in Googles constellation of ventures had ever held the title prior to that.Boston Dynamics, acquired in 2013 during a robotics shopping spree led by Android creator Andy Rubin, enjoyed generous funding at first."Still, Alphabet top brass continue to hold sway over key strategy and financing decisions, a dynamic that has chafed Other Bets chief executives whove complained they are treated more like chief operating officers than shot callers, according to people familiar with the situation. For now, Wall Street isnt worried: Alphabets stock is near an all-time high, having reached ,000 per share in June.

That’s a striking shift, especially for high-performing employees accustomed to moving about the company almost at will, said Punit Soni, a former Google employee who is now chief executive of Learning Motors, an artificial intelligence startup. Some grumble that their role now is to subsidize innovation at their sister companies, rather than to innovate themselves.Meanwhile, a series of executives have departed since the reorganization, including the heads of Nest, an Internet operation called Access and a venture capital firm known as GV.Still, its not yet clear the structure will enable Alphabet to do what most companies cannot: conceive the next wave of innovation in-house or through the development of key acquisitions. “I can see why people will feel like it’s no longer the old Google. In the first quarter, which ended March 31, the ventures lost a combined 5 million; thats on top of a collective .Google’s self-professed mission is to organize the world’s information.CEO or COO?The Alphabet structure is Google’s stab at an age-old corporate conundrum: sustaining innovation within a giant enterprise. Supporters of the restructuring frame the early struggles as typical growing pains. But after the restructuring, Alphabet executives were keenly focused on revenue, one former employee said.Alphabets early days have seen more pruning than expansion of its holdings. Fadell declined to comment. An Alphabet spokeswoman declined repeated requests for comment or to make executives available for interviews. Google paid an eye-popping .Roughly once a quarter, Other Bets leaders meet with the Alphabet board – comprised of Porat, Page, Google co-founder Sergey Brin and David Drummond, Alphabets senior vice president of corporate development – to discuss funding and performance, according to two former employees. They include Nest, a maker of Wi-Fi enabled thermostats; Calico, which seeks to prolong the human lifespan; and X, the companys secretive research lab.But so far Alphabet has failed to show it can convert its Other Bets from experiments to businesses with the reach, impact and money-making potential of Google’s core search and advertising operations. But a company known for engineering excellence is still trying to solve the very human problem of how to organize itself.Employee transfers to X, the illustrious “moonshot factory,” are more complicated now that its a separate entity, former employees say. It unloaded its Terra Bella satellite imaging business in February.“One of the pitfalls (of Alphabet) is that those companies are asked to stand on their own two feet, but they may inherit the غير مجاز مي باشدt structure of Google," said Nest investor Peter Nieh, a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners. "My bet is that the traditional lessons of business organization will in fact result in success at Alphabet. Interviews with two dozen former Alphabet executives and employees reveal an organization grappling with how much time and resources Other Bets deserve in the pursuit of profitability. Ruth Porat, the no-nonsense chief financial officer who has steered the restructuring, has won rave reviews from investors for enforcing financial accountability across Alphabet.

Some Other Bets have made notable strides.5 billion, while its 2016 operating income was .Nearly two years ago, Google co-founder Larry Page announced the tech giant would be remade as Alphabet, a holding company whose units would include Google and an array of unrelated pursuits in areas such as healthcare, self-driving cars and urban planning. Rubin did not respond to requests for comment."As of yet, the restructuring hasn’t provided what I think is one of the immediate benefits, which is risk-taking investment," he said. But it was adrift after Rubins departure, two former employees said.At the same time, Alphabet is establishing separate compensation plans for the Other Bets to reward employees if their ventures succeed, mirroring startup incentives.6 billion loss for 2016.In early 2016, Alphabet explored selling Nest in an effort code-named Project Amalfi, according to three people familiar with the matter. He is the primary investor in Kitty Hawk, a startup in the field that is entirely outside the Alphabet umbrella.."There is one solution that we know works well in capitalism, which is boards, shareholders, CEOs," Schmidt said. Googles share of that revenue was .Alphabets strategy is to give entrepreneurs the autonomy of a startup, coupled with the discipline of a traditional corporate structure. The company has skinned back plans for Google Fiber, which delivers rapid Internet service in 10 metro areas. That goal is central to both the companys mission and investor expectations, analysts say.At one point last year, it was even looking to sell Nest, the largest of the Other Bets, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Life sciences initiative Verily recently attracted 0 million in outside investment."In the meantime, co-founder Page is pursuing yet another "moonshot": flying cars.“A basic premise of Google was people could do whatever they wanted,” Soni said.9 billion. The formula has primed Alphabets emerging businesses for "global impact," Alphabet Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said this month at the annual stockholders meeting at the Mountain View headquarters.Pricey overhead has made the path to profitability tougher.GRUMPY GOOGLERSThe creation of the Other Bets has also changed what it means to work for Google
